Why a social post failed, and how to retry it

Open this in your dashboard

Open Social Media and choose the Posts tab. Each post shows one row per account it was sent to, with that account's status and, if something went wrong, the reason in the platform's own words. Posts that need you are sorted to the top.

What each status means

  • Scheduled: waiting for its time. Cancel stops it for that account.
  • Awaiting approval: submitted, waiting for someone to approve it.
  • Publishing: going out now.
  • Published: live. View opens it on the platform. Published Facebook posts also have a Boost button to promote them as an ad.
  • Failed: it did not go out, and the reason is shown next to it.
  • Needs checking: we sent it but never got confirmation back, so we don't know whether it posted.
  • Cancelled / Skipped: stopped, nothing was sent.

A post sent to several accounts can succeed on some and fail on others. The calendar shows that as Partly failed.

Retrying a failed post

Read the reason first, fix the cause, then click Retry on the failed row. Retry sends that one account again straight away. The accounts that already published are not touched.

Common causes:

  • Access expired or revoked. The account shows Reconnect on the Integrations tab. Reconnect it, then retry.
  • Publishing paused on that account. Click Resume publishing on Integrations.
  • The file doesn't suit the platform, for example a video too long or a format the platform refuses. Fix the media and post again.
  • Story publishing switched off. If the reason says to post the story from the app, post that one by hand.

Needs checking: look before you act

There is no Retry on these on purpose. Retrying could post it twice in public. Check the account on the platform, then:

  • It posted: marks it published. You can paste the link if you have it.
  • It didn't — publish it: sends it now.

Clearing old failures

The amber banner on the social pages has Clear these posts. It removes every post that failed or needs checking. Scheduled, published and draft posts stay.

Next: if the same account keeps failing, open Integrations and check its status and access date.
