Create a segment
A segment is an audience defined by a rule rather than by membership. Open Segments and click New Segment.
Fill in:
- Name — e.g. "VIP customers".
- Description (optional) — what the rule is meant to capture, in words. Worth filling in: in three months the rule will be readable but the intent will not, and the description is what tells you whether it still matches what you wanted.
Then define the conditions — for example two or more orders, or more than $200 spent.
What you get back
The table lists each segment with Members and Last evaluated, so you can see both how many people currently match and when that was last worked out.
Use in campaign takes you straight into a campaign targeted at that segment, which is quicker than creating the campaign and hunting for the segment in the audience dropdown.
Segments need data to work with
A segment can only match on what you actually hold. Rules about orders or spending need a connected store — see Connect your Shopify store. Without that, an order-based segment will sit at zero members and look broken when it is simply unfed.
If a new segment shows zero, check that first before rewriting the rule.
Start broader than you think
A tight rule on a small list produces a segment of eleven people. Segments earn their keep when there is enough volume for the difference to matter, so begin with something wide — bought in the last 90 days — and narrow it once you can see the numbers.
Next: open Segments → New Segment, and write the description before the rule.
