Use a template in a campaign or automation

In a campaign

The Content step of the campaign builder offers Start from a template. Pick one and its subject and body are filled in.

You can then edit freely — the campaign takes a copy. Editing the campaign does not change the template, and editing the template does not retroactively change campaigns already sent.

In an automation

A Send Email step uses a template the same way. The Flow Emails page lists every email across your automations, and an email that has not been given one shows No template set — which is exactly the state that makes a flow enrol contacts and send nothing useful.

If an automation is running but its emails look wrong or empty, check that page first. Go to Automations takes you back to fix it.

Default subject and preview text

A template carries a Default Subject and Preview Text. The subject is a starting point and can be changed per campaign; the preview text usually should not need changing, since it is written for the design rather than the send.

Which to edit — template or campaign?

  • This send only → edit the campaign after applying the template.
  • Every future send → edit the template.

Editing the campaign is the safe default. Changing a template to fix one campaign quietly changes the next five that use it.

Next: open your campaign's Content step and use Start from a template rather than pasting HTML each time.
