Create and manage channels
In Team Chat, click Create a channel beside the Channels heading. Give it a name, choose who can see it, and click Create channel.
The Create a channel dialog
- Name — lowercase letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, e.g.
q4-campaigns. Anything else is converted, and the dialog shows what the channel will be called. Every name in a workspace has to be different. - Description (optional) — one line on what the channel is for, shown in the conversation list.
- Who can see it:
- Everyone in the workspace — anyone on the team can find it, read it and join in.
- Only people I choose — private. Only its members can see the channel and its messages. Pick them under Add people, then click Create private channel.
A workspace can have up to 50 channels, and a private channel up to 200 members. Anyone who can use the chat can create a channel.
Adding and removing people (private channels)
Open the private channel and click Channel members in the header. The dialog lists who's in the channel and marks the person who Created this channel.
- Add people — tick teammates, then click the button that confirms how many you're adding (e.g. "Add 2 people"). Anyone already in the channel can add people, and the people you add are notified.
- Remove — only the channel's creator or a workspace owner or admin can remove someone.
- Leave — appears against your own name. After you leave, you stop seeing the channel and its messages, and someone in the channel has to add you back.
Public channels don't have a member list. Everyone in the workspace is already in them.
Renaming and deleting
Edit channel and Delete channel are in the header. Only the person who created the channel, or a workspace owner or admin, sees them.
Delete channel removes the channel and every message in it for everyone in the workspace, and it can't be undone from here.
#general can't be renamed or deleted. Direct messages can't be renamed or deleted either.
Someone can't find a channel
Private channels only show up for their members. Add the person through Channel members. If they aren't in the list of teammates at all, they need to join the workspace first. An owner or admin adds them under Settings → Workspace, in the People section, with Add person.
