Send a WhatsApp campaign

A WhatsApp campaign sends one approved template to everyone in an audience who has opted in to WhatsApp. Open WhatsApp → Campaigns and click New campaign — or click New Campaign on Campaigns and choose WhatsApp, which opens the same window.

Before you start

New campaign stays greyed out until you have a connected number, an approved template and an audience. The page tells you which one is missing. See Set up WhatsApp and get a template approved.

Create it

In New WhatsApp campaign:

  1. Campaign name — only you see this.
  2. Send from — the WhatsApp number to use.
  3. Audience — the list to send to.
  4. Template — only approved templates are listed.
  5. Variable values — if the template has variables such as {{1}}, fill them in. One set of values is used for the whole campaign.

A preview of the message appears as you go. Who will receive this shows how many people will get it, out of everyone in the audience. Contacts not opted in to WhatsApp, or with no usable number, are excluded.

The panel also shows how Meta will bill it (by the template's category) and the number's daily limit. Anything over the limit waits until the next day.

Click Create as draft. Nothing is sent yet.

Send it

The campaign appears in the list as draft. Click Send now in the Actions column. A message confirms how many were queued and how many were skipped because they were not opted in or had no usable number.

While it is sending, click Stop to cancel the messages still in the queue. Messages already delivered can't be recalled.

Statuses

  • draft — created, not sent.
  • scheduled — waiting to send. Send now sends it straight away.
  • sending — in progress.
  • sent — finished.
  • cancelled — stopped before it finished.
  • failed — could not be sent.

Why fewer people received it

Only contacts opted in to WhatsApp with a usable phone number are included. A large audience with few opted-in contacts is normal. See Where SMS and WhatsApp are, and who can receive them.

Send now starts immediately and Meta bills your WhatsApp account for each message. Check the preview and the Who will receive this count first.

Next: open WhatsApp → Campaigns, create a draft, check the reach number, then click Send now.
